Webber Cradle

More History

The Job Lane House now has the Webber Cradle on display.  The Bedford Historical Society was given a cradle that was first used by the family of James Webber (1665-1732) that dates to the 1690’s.  The cradle came down from the family of Captain John Webber (1732-1808) who owned the Shawsheen house.  The cradle was later owned by Wallace G. Webber (1856-1910) who in 1880 with Alfred Paine founded the brokerage firm of Paine Webber and Company located at 48 Congress Street in Boston.

It was donated to the Historical Society by the estate of Paul Baron Webber, Jr., 9th generation in America and a grandson of Wallace G. Webber.  The sketch is from Abram English Brown’s book, The History of the Town of Bedford, 1891, but the foot board has been lost.

Don Corey brought the cradle one early June Saturday morning.  Please come and see the cradle now in the Parlor Chamber at the Job Lane House. Photo by Joan Ross
